LOCATION
Along the Via Francigena in the Valle del Caprio, near the small village of Canale, stands the Torre nel bosco, an historic building immersed in the bush.
The tower-houses, typical structures of this area of Lunigiana, are buildings that had a defensive and strategic function, placed on the main road junctions.
The Tower House in the woods is located in the municipality of Filattiera (MS), a few kilometres from Pontremoli and Villafranca in Lunigiana, and is set in a unique historical and environmental context.
THE HOUSE
In addition to the wonderful panoramic position overlooking the valley and the exclusive use of original materials – stone, wood and iron – the Torre nel Bosco is distinguished by its typical quadrangular shape and the layout of the spaces, which recall the building’s historical defensive purpose.
The tower house is on three levels.
The access, today as then, is from the first floor, accessible via external stairs: here we find a large living area with an open kitchen and living room.
The ground floor, without an entrance from the outside, but accessible by an internal iron and wooden staircase, was once used for storing goods and provisions, while today it houses a quadruple bedroom with a private bathroom.
The second floor, on the other hand, reached by an internal staircase through a charming trapdoor in exposed stone, has maintained its historic residential function; there we find the second double bedroom with private bathroom.
Access for guests
The house, built on three levels and equipped with a living area, two bedrooms and two bathrooms, is entirely at the use of the guests, as is the lovely and scenic outdoor area, located on the east side of the tower and equipped with a barbecue and a picnic table, and a relaxation area with an hammock and comfortable deckchairs.
