An extraordinary experience in the heart of the Apuan Alps

A unique tour to discover the famous Carrara marble quarries.

From the history of its extraction to its use in the field of art, which has seen it as a universal symbol of excellence for centuries, without forgetting to taste one of its most renowned typical products: Lardo di Colonnata.

The Marble Quarries: between history, landscape and flavour

The journey will take us to the marble basins of Fantiscritti-Miseglia or Colonnata, in the Apuan Alps behind the city of Carrara.

An illustrated marble tour with the history of the main extraction, processing and transport techniques through the centuries. Here, in the heart of the mountain, you can admire the quarrymen at work and discover how the marble industry works today.

Moving on to Colonnata, with a visit to a lard factory and tasting to discover the secrets of the production of this certified local product, Lardo di Colonnata IGP.

Possibility to also visit a sculpture workshop/atelier to learn about the techniques and secrets of working with statuary marble and witness live the creation of a work of art by a master sculptor.

The visit to the marble quarries can be combined with a guided tour of Carrara’s historic centre during the day, strolling through the Academy of Fine Arts, Piazza Alberica, built during the Renaissance period at the behest of Prince Alberico I Cybo Malaspina, the cathedral dedicated to St. Andrew and, behind it, the house where Michelangelo stayed several times during his trips to Carrara.
