Lusuolo Castle is a military fortification standing on the right bank of the River Magra, controlling not only the river ford but also the Via Francigena, one of the main roads of the early Middle Ages. The castle, which originally belonged to the Malaspina family of Spino Secco, fell into the hands of the Genoese Campofregoso family in 1450, who partially demolished it.
The Marquises Malaspina of Lusuolo, caught up in the rivalries between Florence, Genoa and Milan for control of Lunigiana and also facing uprisings by their subjects, subsequently ceded the fiefdom and the lordship to the Grand Dukes of Tuscany and the Medici family, who rebuilt and enlarged Lusuolo Castle in the early 17th century.
