Guided tour of the Malaspina Castle in Monti

The Malaspina Castle in Monti is located on the Via del Volto Santo, an ancient pilgrimage route that connected the Lunigiana to Lucca. Thanks to its strategic position, the castle has dominated the Taverone Valley since the 11th century, controlling the communication routes towards the Apennines through the Abbey of Linari. It is the only castle, together with that of Fosdinovo, that has remained in the possession of the descendants of the first feudal lords.

The Malaspina Castle is a private residence in the municipality of Licciana Nardi in Lunigiana. The castle can be visited on certain dates, which can be found in the calendar below. The visit is guided by Sigeric Tourist Guides, experts in tourism in Lunigiana.

The Malaspina Castle of Monti

Monti, formerly known as Venelia, is an area of very ancient settlement, as evidenced by the discovery of no less than five prehistoric stele statues. The Malaspina Castle of Monti has followed over the centuries the historical and political events of the Villafranca chiefdom, linked to the Malaspina dello Spino Secco. In the 16th century, the Marquis Moroello Malaspina transformed it into a noble residence with beautiful vaulted ceilings and monumental fireplaces.

After the devastating earthquake of 1920, the castle was carefully restored to its former splendour by the Malaspina family. From the splendid terrace you can admire the whole of the Lunigiana, from the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines to the Apuan Alps, and appreciate the strategic role played by the castle over the centuries.

The guided tour lasts about one hour and must be booked in advance.
