The Carrara Marble Quarries and Michelangelo: Between History, Art and Landscape

The journey of discovery of marble includes a visit to the “Walter Danesi” Museum Quarry in Fantiscritti, in the heart of the Miseglia marble basin in the Apuan Alps behind the city of Carrara. An illustrated journey through marble with the history of the main techniques of marble extraction, processing and transportation through the centuries.

The guided tour continues with a visit to a quarry in the heart of the mountain, where it is possible to admire the quarrymen at work and discover how the marble industry works today. In addition, it is also possible to visit a sculpture workshop/atelier, to learn the techniques and secrets of working with statuary marble and to witness live the creation of a work of art by a master sculptor.

The visit to the marble quarries can be combined with a guided tour of Carrara’s historic centre on the same day.
