Medieval Pontremoli itinerary
The guided tour of medieval Pontremoli in Lunigiana, northern Tuscany, starts at our Guide Office. Come and visit us at our Sigeric Point, in Via Ricci Armani 10, Pontremoli.
With Sigeric’s tourist guides – experts in tourism in Lunigiana – we’ll visit the historic bridges of Pontremoli. The bridges of Pontremoli are crossing points for pilgrims and medieval travellers along the historic routes that connected Europe to the Mediterranean. Not only the Via Francigena, but also the Via degli Abati and the Via del Volto Santo have, over time, shaped the Lunigiana region and all its villages. We will move from the Ponte del Giubileo, the first point of crossing the river Magra, to the Ponte Stemma, the municipal emblem together with the medieval tower.
Then we’ll reach Piazza della Repubblica, where you can visit the basements of the Town Hall. In medieval times, the Town Hall of Pontremoli was about 3 metres lower than the current ground level of the village. In the square, the central tower of the Cortina di Cacciaguerra (known by the people of Pontremoli as Il Campanone), a 14th century fortification, is still visible. The route then continues through the village of Piagnaro and ends at the castle, with a visit to the outer sandstone walls and the bastions of the fortress.
