Following in the footsteps of the great Renaissance artist

An educational itinerary to discover the famous Carrara marble, from the history of its extraction to its use in art.

A material that for 20 Centuries now has been a universal symbol of excellence in art and architecture, but which also tells the stories and traditions of those who have mined, transported and worked it over time.

The Marble Quarries: between history and landscape

The journey to discover marble includes a visit to the “Walter Danesi” Museum Quarry in Fantiscritti, in the heart of the Miseglia marble basin in the Apuan Alps behind the city of Carrara. An illustrated journey through marble with the history of the main techniques of marble extraction, processing and transportation through the centuries.

The journey continues with the opportunity to visit a working tunnel quarry: here, in the heart of the mountain, it is possible to admire the quarrymen at work up close and learn how the marble industry works today. Alternatively, it is possible to visit a sculpture workshop/atelier to learn about the techniques and secrets of working with statuary marble and witness live the creation of a work of art by a master sculptor.

The visit to the marble quarries can be combined with a guided tour of Carrara’s historic center on the day.
